The only time I consider Disk Utility to be reliable with VoiceOver is when partitioning from scratch; then it's usually more convenient to use DU instead of the CLI. But ultimately you can do more with the diskutil tool than with DU itself, in particular manipulating CoreStorage groups, so you might as well learn how IMO.
