I was worried about this as well in he event I purchase an  MBA. I also cannot 
find any way of selecting folders to sync.  I do not know if you can get extra 
options if you do a physical control click with the Trackpad.
My backup strategy if I do get an MBA is to locate my DropBox folder on a small 
pocket  sized Buffalo type     drive. I got a couple of 512 GB ones a few years 
ago and they seemed reasonably robust even though they did not need a power 
supply so hopefully even larger capacity  ones of similar small size  are 
available now.
My other plan was to just put a link to www,dropbox.com on   the desktop for 
emergency access  in the case  I do not have the external with me.
