I can’t test this right now, but what about the tags area of the side bar? It 
is an expandable area and has items for the couple of tags I have used. I don’t 
have Time Machine on this system so I can’t see if it gets included in the 
listing but I would be surprised if it did. Also can’t you limit the smart 
folder to a specific folder and its children?
