The division between responsibilities between screen readers and application access is always an issue I agree. Sometimes it is clear. Microsoft latest Word is an obvious example where they have clearly neglected to allow Voiceover to hook into the edit areas.

I think the issue about Safari and Voiceover is more difficult. Apple has full responsibility for both applications. Macs are still a minority platform for most website developers and I think few corporations will invest in multiple web architectures to suit minority platforms. The exception is the existence of mobile site versions of web pages which sometimes offer better access. I think it is highly unlikely though that web site providers will invest in Mac specific versions of their web sites, especially if sighted Mac users not using Voiceover will apparently cope OK.

In this situation I believe that the only realistic hope is that the access team at Apple is somehow going to get Voiceover to match the screen reading access on these more difficult financial sites that the Windows Screen Readers are currently achieving.

I did point out to Accessibility at Apple that these sites were the major online providers serving millions of customers in total so hopefully they will respond.

Apparently these sites work well if your bank does not require Verified by Visa to authorize online purchases so this seems to be one of the major stumbling blocks. The other problem is demonstrating the problem as of course these verification screens are behind password protected areas so you cannot simply send a link to demonstrate the issue.

I have not actually tried one of these for a couple of months so will have to give it a check later just to make sure that nothing magical has happened recently. I am a little nervous of this as I have had to end up resetting bank passwords etc in the past which is areal pain but if some improvement has occurred I will update.

Hi!
OK I’m no expert but also could some of these problems be that sites do not
code properly for Safari on the Mac I always hear sites talking about jaws
window eyes and NVDA and sometimes IDivices but no mention of Mac and voice
over!
This is on UK sites and of course they say their accessible compliant!
So maybe some are out of Apples hands!

Hello,
I know. While I’m sure that things sometimes get corrected, still at other
times, I kind of have my doubts. But here’s hoping that Apple listens and will
in time correct things. I wish they would demonstrate a little more willing to
the consumer that they are really trying to correct accessibility concerns.

I have changed the subject line to reflect the direction the discussion is
going.

My own observations on Safari is that it is my preferred browser on all
platforms for general news and page reading largely because of the excellent
Reader function.

However like others I find that there are serious obstacles to using Safari and
Voiceover on many websites. Generally these problems appear related to sites
involving financial security measures / password verification and after various
problems experienced I reluctantly have decided to revert to Windows for many
task.

These include.
1. My Nat West Bank site which is unusable with Safari and Voiceover and
dumps me out at unpredictable moments. Entering passwords on this site under
Safari is also very confusing as there is no audible key echo, even a click.
Whether this is a Safari or Voiceover problem I do not know but this log in
section and other parts of the site works fine with both Firefox and IE with a
range of Window Screen Readers so I suspect it may be a Voiceover issue.

2. There are problems for me with the multiple shopping websites which use the
UK Verified by Visa security password verification system for authorising
payments.
To be fair I have occasionally managed to get this to work on Safari but on too
many occasions Voiceover does not recognise the edits boxes on the page, or
even when it does it does not seem able to read out the message content asking
for characters from your password.

On many occasions Voiceover does not give any feedback at all, even a click
when attempting to enter text into these edit boxes which is confusing and has
in the past resulted in me having to reset my password because of too many log
in attempts.

This means that even if I do the first part of a shop on Safari I normally
switch to Windows to complete the checkout of my trolley or basket to avoid
experiencing these problems.

What would help would be a screen refresh or screen redraw function as
available in Jaws or Window-Eyes as this resolves many focus issues on that
platform but I am not sure that this is a technology available to Voiceover ,
at least I have never found it so it would be great if somebody disabused me of
this.

I have reported these issues to Apple Accessibility and pointed out that in the
UK at least we are talking about the most major web providers. I think Nat West
is still the biggest online bank and all Nat West customers have to use
Verified by Visa if they are to use major online stores like Tesco's and
Sainsburys.

Hopefully one day it will be sorted out.

I have been finding that safari fails quite a bit in certain websites where I
try to make a purchase. I can think of three websites off-hand where I recently
was kicked out using Safari. It just doesn’t work with Safari. Even my bank
yells a bit when I log on with safari although it lets me in.
In these cases, I use internet explorer in a windows VM and problem solved.

I checked to see that safari had JAVA enabled, but beyond that I can’t think of
what might be the problem. Maybe Safari just isn’t a main stream browser and
can’t handle sophisticated websites.
I like using safari, but I can’t rely on it for all my internet browsing and
need a backup like IE in windows. Too bad!
