Hello Frank, To turn off the preview pane in Mail, first set Mail to Classic view in the Viewing pane in Mail preferences. Close Preferences and navigate to the Messages table. Turn off the TrackPad commander and Quick Nav. Press VO-Down Arrow to be on the horizontal splitter. Bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5. Press down on the trackpad with one finger and drag another finger down the trackpad towards you. You should now have dragged the horizontal splitter to the bottom of the window so there should be nothing below it.
Sometimes it takes several attempts to get this right.
