You say it can't be done. I wonder with the help of someone maybe more
knowledgeable than me, if an Apple Script could be written and mapped to a
key to allow it to work.

Nope. It can't be done. You have to route your mouse cursor, turn off VO,
option+click, and turn VO back on.
