Actually, though I cannot confirm who his friend is for certain, if it's who I think it is, then their system definitely will run Yosemite. I know that wasn't the question, but I'm just not getting why this person's so hesitant to upgrade. Yes, you can update to 10.6.8 from 10.6.3 for free using Software Update. Once that’s done you will have the Mac App Store, with which you download and install Yosemite or, if your hardware doesn’t support that, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks (but most likely Lion). You may have to put down more money for versions prior to Yosemite, however; this you do through Apple’s online store.
