I put the older installer on a thumb drive and ejected it, still no
change. What seems to be happening is that the system is waiting for
something, ike my password. Nut there are no dialogs of any kind.

believes you already have the apps. Are you sure you don’t have the apps
anywhere on any connected drive? I believe I remember something about the MAS
tracking bundles differently than just looking at the Applications folder. And
a restart never hurts, if you didn’t try that.
If all else fails, go to the MAS, then Option-press the Purchases button (with
Option-space on the radio button). Now Option-press the “Downloaded” button.
Now it really should start. Hopefully.
