Hi Sharron,

Karabater is useful in certain situations. For example, Suppose you have
reduced sensitivity and so you want to use an old windows keyboard because it
has very high key definition. Unfortunately, it has only one windows key and
one applications key. Thus, the windows key is recognized by your mac as a
left option key, but the applications key is not recognized. Karabater will
let you set that applications key to become a right option key.

Or, suppose that you want to use voiceovers numpad commander to reduce your
reliance on 3 and 4 key combinations, but your laptop/bluetooth keyboard
doesn't have the number pat. Karabater restores the numpad feature of portable
keyboards that was removed by apple in 2010. So, using the fn key as a
modifier, the following keys are added:
m = numpad 0,
j, k and l = numpad 1, 2 and 3,
u, i and o = numpad 4, 5 and 6,
7, 8 and 9 = numpad 7, 8 and 9.
And other keys in that vicinity take care of numpad functions such as point,
star, slash, plus and minus.

Voiceover is pretty numpad independent unless you choose to set it up to use a
numpad, and quite honestly, a bluetooth numpad or joystick has a bit more
appeal. Windows screen readers though, are extremely dependent on the numpad
and being without one in your mac based windows instalation is very
debilitating. So Karabater's numpad is really handy.

Karabater also lets you do nifty things to your caps lock key that apple didn't
really intend for you to be able to do. Thanks to that, you can give your
windows screen reader use of the caps lock key and add a level of convenience.

In short, Apple gives you a huge number of features, but doesn't give you the
keyboard keys to run them all, much less keyboard shortcuts for all of them.
Karabater not only gives you a huge amount of extra flexibility in terms of
what features you assign to what keys, but also helps OS and windows play
nicely together and share the keyboard.

Hope this helps,

Erik Burggraaf
