That was exactly part of the confusion: I did put the iso file on the desktop as I had read something to that effect in some of the support pages. But bootcamp 6 on my late 2010 macbook air would not even recognise it and there was no option to point it to the iso file. It insisted on having a physical disk in the drive. So in the end I did insert a genuine physical windows 7 disk into my external usb super drive and the process proceeded up until I chose the partition with bootcamp from the list onto which to install windows and to my horror a message came up that windows could not be installed onto this partition. Att that point, mindful of my ignorance, I thought it better to abort the process rather than risk damage to my macbook air. Maybe bootcamp 6 is designed in such a way so as not to allow installations from iso in El Capitan. Apple may have decided to protect users like myself from playing around too much. :)
