Andrew,
You might need to call Apple to verify this. Information I found
indicates that El Capitan on your model Mac will only support Windows 8
or newer
IF you already had Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp, then this
would work. So this means that as a NEW installation, Windows 7 is not
supported. That would explain what happened. Not what you wanted to hear.
Would Windows 10 work for you? I am still using Yosemite and Windows
7. I have 2 apps that will not work under 10.

That was exactly part of the confusion: I did put the iso file on the desktop
as I had read something to that effect in some of the support pages. But
bootcamp 6 on my late 2010 macbook air would not even recognise it and there
was no option to point it to the iso file. It insisted on having a physical
disk in the drive. So in the end I did insert a genuine physical windows 7
disk into my external usb super drive and the process proceeded up until I
chose the partition with bootcamp from the list onto which to install windows
and to my horror a message came up that windows could not be installed onto
this partition. Att that point, mindful of my ignorance, I thought it better
to abort the process rather than risk damage to my macbook air. Maybe bootcamp
6 is designed in such a way so as not to allow installations from iso in El
Capitan. Apple may have decided to protect users like myself from playing
around too much. :)
Many thanks for your responses, everyone. I think I will give it a rest for a
while. Got a bit scared.

Hi,
Thanks first of all for replying.
I've failed miserable to install Windows 7 under bootcamp in El Capitan. I
think that part of the problem is Bootcamp in El Capitan which seems to work
differently to all the descriptions I have seen here on the list and on Apple's
pages. When I start the process, I only ever get two checkboxes. The first is
to download the appropriate drivers onto the usb flash drive formatted with Ms
dos FAT and the scheme needs to be set to master boot record. Then there is
only one more checkbox to install Windows 7. The drivers were duly downloaded
and put onto the flash drive. Then on the second screen I again only have two
checkboxes: first is unchecked as default because the drivers are already
installed onto the flash drive, and the second is checked by default to do with
installing Windows. I first thought I could install from iso file but I was
wrong. Bootcamp wasn't seeing the iso file and kept returning an error
message. So I then found the original Windows 7 disk, inserted
i
t into the super drive and the installation went ahead. The mac drive was
divided and computer restarted. From there, I needed sighted assistance.
There was a message on the screen to decide onto which partition to install
Windows. There were 4 partitions to choose from. It really confused me
because there was only one with the name bootcamp in it and when I chose - or
rather the sighted friend - to install on it - I got an error message. I
became worried I might destroy my mac partition by not knowing what I was doing
and I aborted the process and thankfully via bootcamp returned my mac to its
original state. I'm not so keen on doing the installation again. Many of the
Apple support pages on the subject of Windows 7 installation with bootcamp are
for previous versions of bootcamp. My version of bootcamp in El Capitan is 6.
I'm really frustrated that sometimes Apple just makes things so automated that
one can't make any choices.
So that's my story of woes.
Best wishes to everyone
Andrew

Andrew,
I fought with this for several weeks before I figured out that my particular
Mac needed me to download the drivers from Apple.
I had to create the bootable USB drive.
It’s said you need a 16GB flash drive, and that’s what I got, but not sure why
that size.
1. Go in to Bootcamp utility.
2. check the first 2 boxes to create the installation media, and to download
latest drivers from Apple.( this 2nd box is unavailable so is not changeable)
The 3rd box should be unchecked as you do not want to completely install just
yet.
With some Macs this is all you had to do and you could check that 3rd box and
complete the installation, but in my case, I had to download the drivers from
apple and add them to the newly created flash drive installer.
Once you have downloaded the drivers from Apple for your specific Mac, you can
copy and paste the “Bootcamp” and “$WinPEDriver$” folders to the main area of
your newly created Windows installer.
Now you can go back in to Bootcamp utility and uncheck the first 2 boxes and
check only the 3rd, and complete installation of Windows.
I do not know this for sure, but I think it has to do with the SSD’s in the
newer Macs. I also think most of the problems are installing Windows 7, and I
suspect the proper drivers are just not available on the Win 7 disk.
I hope this helps someone, and please let me know if I need to clarify
anything. Wrote this quickly.

Hi,
When installing Windows 7 in bootcamp from ISO, is it necessary to manually get
the appropriate Apple drivers for windows, or will Bootcamp get them
automatically and install them?
I've been poring through help pages and I can see confusing info.
Many thanks
