Its amazing how Apple can put out information in several places that
do not sync. Of course, its a large company with many heads that do not
talk to one another.
Here is a link that specifically relates to El Capitan which I
should have shared sooner.

As a rule, BootCamp Assistant always does the right thing, fetching the latest
drivers and giving you the choice of install media for your hardware and
supported OS.
BootCamp assistant partitions the disk, but you have to format the resulting
partition. OS X doesn’t know how to create an NTFS filesystem, but Windows
Setup does. So, the partition starts out as FAT32, which Windows recognises as
space that can be used for Windows if you format it first. Press “Drive
Options …” or some such button in Setup, once “BOOTCAMP” is selected.
In my experience Apple are generally quite ruthless in dropping outdated
information, and calling it “Archived”. If the support article says that it’s
archived, it won’t get maintenance, whereas if it doesn’t, it’s probably still
current but missing information you need in your particular case. For example,
the current BootCamp help pages simply do not explain what optical
drive-containing Mac owners should do to install Windows. This is rather
regrettable, because as things stand, most users will probably get very
confused.
