You’re better off in my opinion going with VM fusion instead of boot camp. That’s just my personal opinion though because I like to have access to both at the same time.
The rest is up to the way you use your machine. If you’re just doing basic browsing / mail etc an air will probably work well. If you need a more power house machine for large spreadsheets or maybe you run a lot of virtual machines or complex programs, music editing etc then go with as much machine as you can buy. I have had no problems with any of the generations of Macbook pro personally so can’t speak to that part of your question.
