Hi Phil, I use both. Let's use m.facebook for this troubleshooting.
When you find a friend and open the page/wall, you are looking for "add friend". This is located above the message, photos, follows, likes etc, in that cluster. I believe the Add Friend is above this cluster. And yes, it is a link, not a button. Let me know if that helps.
