The name should be the same including case and all the security settings / keys should be the same which they almost certainly are. I’ve seen very few units that support different keys and security for 2.4 and 5.0. The general settings I use are a decently secure key, WPA2 security, yes encryption (most routers don’t have this choice but in case they do), and I use WPA2 only not WPA/WPA2 mixed because it performs better. If you have old gear that needs WPA then leave as mixed otherwise optimize by selecting 2 only. Other stuff like DTIM interval I leavealone, if your router supports it you can enable short guard interval. If you don’t have any of these settings then don’t worry about it.:)
Other things I suggest are making sure you’re on one of the main channels like 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4 or 151, 157 or 161 among others on the 5.0 GHZ band. You can use the lower channels of 5.0 like 36, 40 and so forth but these are DFS which means shared with weather RADAR frequencies. Believe me, weather RADAR will win.:) I had an issue where WBZ channel 4 TV had a Doppler RADAR behind the building I was working in and it made WiFi go sideways. Channels are important, use the wrong ones on 2.4 or 5.0 and you overlap randomly with your neighbors and the routers have hard times negotiating this, also use congested channels and performance drops so try to find one that’s open. Or do what I did, I live in a WiFi saturated area so I jacked up my power.:) I can pick up my home WiFi for over a mile but I can’t stand with in 6 feet of the rack it sits on for long durations according to the manufacturers instructions. Then again it says for outdoor use only as well and that seemed optional so we’ll see. > On May 24, 2016, at 11:56 AM, Jenine Stanley <[email protected]> wrote: > > Scott, is there anything else that needs setting when giving both networks > the same name?
