I think AppleSIM is presently a dual-use option on iPad only at the moment.  
It’s a nice idea and apparently does help in certain cases where the 
alternative is full-on international roaming charges (but still not quite as 
cost-effective as buying local, obviously).

But really, yeah, it’s just stupid.  The whole notion of “Activation” is 
meaningless for an unlocked device.  You should just be able to insert a SIM 
card, or not, according to preference, and configure any parameters yourself if 
the phone doesn’t know about them directly.  I could do it on my Nokia E51, for 
heaven’s sake; why not on the iPhone?
