I think they both work the same way. The difference is that focus lands on the 
oldest message when you open a thread, so you have to swipe up, whereas it 
lands on the newest when you expand, so you have to swipe right to go down. 
That is, the order seems the same, but your position and resulting direction of 
travel are reversed between the two modes.
