So I might be thinking of the orientation differently.

With the touch pad facing away from you assuming it’s lying flat on a surface, 
the buttons oriented with the volume control on the right and the group of 3 on 
the left, the lightning port would be on the bottom edge facing your chest 
opposite the tough pad.  At least that’s where mine is on the trailing edge 
below the buttons.

Does that make more sense?
