Its not ridiculous, its business. We all would love to pay a one time fee and get a lifetime of free upgrades. If we worry about the off chance that at some point we will have to pay for an upgrade, we would still be using MS DOS.

No, they do not MAKE a version incompatible with new OS upgrades so they can collect upgrade fees. That is faulty thinking.
