Tim, well said, much better than I but we’re on exactly the same page. Well played sir.:)
Related to this, I have a long time friend who used a GPS system to project a dot in space that he trained his guide dog to follow. As the directions in the route changed the dot would move relative to the dog’s vision in the direction he wanted the dog to turn. He was able to build more accurate maps I think by augmenting the GPS / tower signal with the local compass and gyro and have the dog basically run on a sort of auto pilot. You’re points about accuracy are very solid. One other potential issue is depending if static navigation is set you might need tome at more than 5 MPH to get an accurate detection of your movement and direction. This is because most of these systems are built for use in cars so require a minimum amount of movement so you’re not constantly recalculating your position based on signal reflections and atmospherics. The iPhone should be fine in this area. You also get signal augmentation and the interpolation between the two navigation standards to help deal with the inaccuracy a bit. Also the 5S is an old phone, it may be a bit less feature packed than the current model but it should give you general information which others have mentioned should be combined with good mobility skills. Won’t help this camping trip but the new standards will support down to a half meter accuracy instead of 3 to 9 or more so this will also help. If we could only decrypt the military signal we’d have this capability today but somehow they won’t let blind travelers use the same GPS signals as they use to steer missiles. > On Aug 31, 2017, at 3:14 PM, Tim Kilburn <[email protected]> wrote: > > Hi, > > the distinction to be noted here, is that getting directions via a mapping > app like Apple Maps or Google Maps, vs GPS locations and compass > directionality.
