Try ctrl power button as that is the key press to bring up shutdown.

No, I do not get a shut down message when holding down the power button, and the CMD-Ctrl-Option-Fn-Power does not seem to accomplish anything here. Re FileVault, when you type your username, can you tell what you are typing? In the password field, I could hear the little clicks that indicate that characters are being entered. But I heard nothing in the username field. And it was strange. I would type in my username, then tab to go to password, but would be prompted again for username. I would type my username a second time, and then I could go to the password field. I'd like to use FileVault, but am now leery of ending up locked out of my Mac. For example, I had no way to determine that my username had been entered correctly. my husband eventually saw that there were options like "Forgot Password" "keyboard not working" and so on, I never saw any of that. Also, I was completely unable to adjust output. I could not brighten the screen, so my husband could see it. I could not turn VO on or off. I was really wondering at one point whether I was locked out of my MBP permanently. I don't ever want to go through this again! So I know that some of you actually like FileVault.
