Hi, Regarding whether it's better to use one method or another. I'd say that it's just a matter of preference. Some folks prefer the ease of using an app that does all the background work for you and presents things in a graphical interface for them. Others prefer to go down to the basics and do things themselves. Sometimes, it's a matter of finances, why spend money for the app when Terminal will do the same just fine with minimal effort.
Regarding Administrative privileges, it sounds to me like there's something going on with your system. I'd create a new user just for fun, make sure to make it a user with Admin privileges, then try using the Terminal once again. to make sure you don't have a typing error, just copy and paste the command into Terminal instead of trying to copy it exactly.
