Hi. I have tested File Vault on my Mac Mini as I set it up once I installed everything.
Just in case you haven't done so Donna, go in to system preferences users and accounts and find log in options where you can make sure voice over is turned on at the log in screen. Also set your name and password option rather than a list of users if you are the only person using your machine.
