Anne, Anne, Anne. (big smile)

You know, I felt a pang of guilt as I read your post because I haven't
performed a completely clean install of an OS, on my primary partition, since
2009. (big smile).

I keep telling myself, "Okay, next time I'm going to wipe the disk and start
from scratch"; but, somehow I never do.

The funny thing is that I perform clean installs of computers, both Windows and
Macs, multiple times a month for friends, family, and friends of family but
there's something about doing it on my own Mac. (smile). What's even worse, I
perform clean installs on my various secondary partitions, from time-to-time,
with no problems; and, even more, I have multiple bootable backups of my
primary partition so, were something to go wrong, I could quickly and easily
restore the drive. There's just something about doing that clean install.

Oh well, next time. (smile).

Subject: Re: Upgrade to High Sierra.

Hello Jonathan,

I presume this upgrade was just that, not a clean install?
I always prefer to make a bootable USB key to install a new version of the OS
and to take the opportunity to do a bit of housekeeping on my computer.
It looks as though about a third of the people on my French list who’ve done an
upgrade rather than a clean install, have had fairly major problems with High
Sierra.
For French speakers, there’s an additional problem in that the French voice
does not become available until the installation is complete, and even then,
you have to go into VoiceOver Utility to get one.
This is the worst new version of the OS that I can remember and I’m not putting
High Sierra on my personal computer for the time being.

Cheers,

Anne

Well, the upgrade to High Sierra for me was not as smooth as the last two
upgrades.

Basic information:
mid 2015 MacBookAir 11 inch with all upgrades possible.
File Vault installed.

I started the upgrade but was on a network that was not performing well at
first so I believe most of my issues were related to that.

1. After waiting a bit after clicking the restart button, I came back and my
Macintosh was saying "Installer has no windows". That was all VoiceOver would
say.

I got my wife to look at the screen and it said installation had failed, and I
needed to power off and then power back on. I needed to do not just a power on
but a power on with command-R clicked. At this point I was prompted for
installing High Sierra and proceeded. My wife actually did the work from the
recovery partition and so VoiceOver was not turned on for the process.
After about 20 minutes the system rebooted and prompted for file vault access
but I could not get File Vault prompts to speak. So it was back to my wife.
After putting in passwords installation process phase 2 started and ran for
about 35 minutes. I was able to turn on VoiceOver after about 2 minutes of this
installation and everything went smoothly for me from there.

First observations, I was surprised that SIRI did not have permission for my
location and that Facebook did. In general I really don't like Facebook knowing
that much information about me. I also noticed when I was in the privacy
settings that the selected item in a table seemed to become unselected when I
moved around a bit causing me to have to re-find the application I wanted to
review options for. This might have changed once I adjusted VoiceOver
navigation options.
Also was a little disappointed at the reduced number of options in the
Navigation area of VoiceOver utility. Though I will review what folks were
saying about mouse clicks now that I am on this system, and see what happens in
various modes.

I like the ability to directly enter values into sliders though the interface
seems to need a little cleanup. I'll write later about my views on this but
obviously the only way to get results is to provide appropriate feedback
directly to Apple.

HTH those still waiting to upgrade,

Jonathan Cohn
