I think I remember seeing something like that when iCloud first appeared in
MacOS replacing me.com . Apple has redone its credentialing of Mail and other
services over the past two to three years with most of that information now in
System Preferences instead of individual applications. I made sure when I got
this computer that I removed all credentials in Mail/iMessage/Contacts and put
the information into the Internet accounts settings area. I think this solved
some weirdness I was seeing before doing this.
In terms of my upgrade, at least all the non-system information was maintained
and I do not need to restore from backups.
