Hi, Snapshots can still be taken even with automatic backups turned off. Because Time Machine is enabled, your Mac is constantly taking snapshots of the system so that when the backup drive is available, it is a quicker process. This also keeps the backup process intact and you are able to get at previous snapshots for restoration purposes. Regarding iTunes, if you don't use iCloud Music Library, then iTunes will usually make a copy of the music you're playing unless you uncheck the box in the Advanced pane of iTunes Preferences that refers to copying music that you add to the library. If this music is on an external drive though, iTunes usually copies it whether this box is checked or not. At least it used to. If you're just sampling the music and don't want it copied to iTunes, how about using QuickLook to listen? Locate the title you wish to sample, then just press the spacebar on it to play. Either cmd-w or Escape to back out of QuickLook, spacebar to Pause/Play toggle.
