Tim,
I thought I would also look at the About This Mac, Storage. As I
move through the scroll area, if I land on an area for each connected
drive, there is what looks like constant refreshing of data. What is
that? I leave my TM drive disconnected during the week so will compare
before and after next time I reconnect it.

Hi,
Do you have Time Machine turned on, but do not have a drive always
available for the backups. If so, there could be snapshots of your
drive stored while it waits for the ability to access the backup Time
Machine drive. You may also wish to look under the Apple menu, About
This Mac, interact with the ToolBar and press on Storage. See what it
reveals there.

You can try it, not sure how long the trial period is. Link is below.

Ramy,
You might try CleanMyMac 3. I run this weekly and also use it to do
clean uninstalls of apps.
