Hello Mike,
What I do in these circumstances is do VO-m-m, bring the mouse, and slide my 
finger toward  me on the trackpad until I hear “window". I then click by 
pressing down on the trackpad and can enter my password. Of course, you have to 
turn the trackpad commander off for this to work.
