In Finder do a command shift c. Do you see it there? If so, can you
open it to view its contents?

When you plug a drive in of any kind, it should show up on your
desktop. If you navigate to the finder, the drive will be there. It is
good computer management practice to always safely eject a drive when
you are finished with it. To do so, find the drive in finder and press
Command E.

plugged one in and it said my Mac could not read it and gave me an
option to eject it. But the next one I tried nothing happened, I was
at least expecting a dialog box giving me some instructions. But when
I pulled it out it told me that I didn’t eject it correctly. But it
didn’t tell me how to do that.
I do have an old external hard drive as well which has lots of MP3
audio books on it, but I didn’t want to plug that in until I had some
idea of what I was doing.
