That's great news, Kevin. And definitely something for all of us to remember.

Guys,

I don’t believe it. I think I’ve just fixed this. The problem was local, as
guys from rwp originally surmised. I went intoApple Mail/Preferences/E-mail
Accounts. I looked at my iCloud account and looked at mailbox behaviors. It
turned out that the address for that account was shown as [email protected]. I
clicked on it and was able to change it to [email protected].

As a test, I sent this note to the RWP list as a reply to an existing message.
I noticed that, as never before, replying to a message from [email protected] now
shows the sender address as [email protected] and not [email protected] as
before. when I hit Send, the message was sent and appeared in my inbox because
I receive all messages from this list. Problem solved!
Thanks again for all the patience and help. I apologize for all the traffic
and clutter.

Best,
Kevin

guys,

Guys,

I’ve read Simon’s comments and everyone else and I need to say that I am
hopelessly confused. Let me restate the situation for those who joined late.

1. a few years ago, I subscribed to a mailing list called Reapers Without
Peepers. It was hosted by a hosting service called bluegrasspals.com. So, the
message e-mail address was [email protected]. At least I think that’s it.
I subscribed to this list using [email protected]. I did this because I wanted
my e-mail from this list to be in a general mailbox apart from my gmail
mailbox that I use for business and general purpose correspondence.

2. A few months back, this mailing list migrated from bluegrasspals.com to
groups.io. So, now the mailing address was [email protected]. I decided to
unsubscribe my me.com address and resubscribe to Reapers Without Peepers at the
Groups.io site using my iCloud.com address. This had been created when me.com
essentially “went away.” As a side note, I should say that my me.com address
continues to function in a few rare cases where it appears to be grandfathered,
somehow. But in the main, If accidentally send from me.com, nobody sees what I
send.

3. I soon discovered that, for reasons I never quite understood, I could post
to [email protected] using the iCloud.com address and the e-mail would post.
However, and this is the critical part, whenever anyone posted to the list and
I replied to that post, my default sender address would not, repeat NOT be
iCloud.com. It would be me.com. The only solution would be to always be aware
that all outgoing replies, as distinct from original posts, would be sent via
me.com, not iCloud.com. In such a case, it would be essential to make sure act
I had changed the sending e-mail address to iCloud from me.

To the best of my knowledge, I have promoted my iCloud.com address to be the
primary address associated with my iPhone. I have removed me.com such that it
can’t be used to reach me on FaceTime or on my devices, so far as I know.
However, I can’t remove it from the list of outgoing e-mail addresses available
in Mac Mail, nor can I remove it from my iPhone because it’s an Apple ID. When
I turn that off on my iPhone 7, my entire iCloud mailbox disappears from my
iPhone.

I can post an original message to RWP from iCloud.com and it will show up. But
every time I reply to a post, I have to be very careful to change the sender
address from me.com to iCloud.com and I need to add that’s really ticking me
off, to put it politely! If it is absolutely impossible to eliminate the need
to make this extra step when sending to this particular mailing list, I guess
I’ll just have to deal with it. I have years of correspondence wit this list
as either me.com or iCloud.com. That correspondence is all in my iCloud inbox.
I don’t want to unsubscribe and resubscribe with my Gmail address because that
would effect the purpose of leaving my RWP e-mail in my iCloud mailbox going
forward.

Tim has graciously agreed to meet with me tomorrow. I’m hoping he has Team
Viewer or some other means of remoting into my Mac mini. I suppose I could
dial into iCloud using my DAW, a Windows 10 machine with Team Viewer, if that
would be of any help. I don’t have Team Viewer or any other similar software
on my Mac mini and I guess we’ll have to talk about that. I think it would be
best if he could see my iCloud screens to have the greatest possible
appreciation of my exact situation with e-mail addresses, aliases, and the
like.

I think I’ve explained everything of consequence.

Is there anyway to expunge me.com from the list of outgoing e-mail addresses in
Mac Mail? There is no me.com account in either preferences or internet
accounts. Is there a server I should hose?

I look forward to any available resolution.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello Tim,

Thank you for the follow up.

Yes, I see the problem with my suggestion.

Based on my understanding, Apple states that an Apple ID cannot be changed if
the ID is an @me.com, @Mac.com or @iCloud.com address.

Were Kevin's primary email address a third-party email, then he could, indeed,
promote and @me, @Mac, or @iCloud alias to become his new Apple ID. However,
once having done that, he would not be able to change that ID, again. The
point is that once any Apple-owned domain email is set as an Apple ID, that's
it.

Actually, now that I think about it; I have done this, myself. This is to say,
I removed an alias from one of my Apple accounts and in less than a minute, I
was able to use it as an Apple ID.

So, assuming this is still the case, Cannot Kevin separate the alias from his
old Apple ID and then, simply merge the two IDs into one? I know that Apple
does allow this. I believe that this would preserve his purchase history, etc.

Hi mark,

At the moment, his primary eMail address for the Apple ID is the older me.com
address with the iCloud being an alias of the older original address. Yes, one
could delete the alias and create a separate Apple ID for this, but that does
two negative things. First, if any purchases are connected to the origianal
Apple ID, they would no longer be associated with the iCloud address which is
the one he now uses. Second, I believe that the iCloud alias address would be
reserved for a period of time even though it has been deleted, thus making it
unusable until it is released for use. Sorry, I did send the primary
instructions to Kevin off-list already, although he told me that it didn't work
for him. Essentially, what I suggested was to promote the iCloud address to be
the primary Apple ID instead of the older me.com address. This should make it
so that the outgoing messages are definitely coming from the iCloud address.

Apple outlines the process here.

After this has been done, I believe that the problem should be solved.
Although, Kevin mentioned that he was unsuccessful. We will be connecting in a
more direct way hopefully tomorrow to see where the problem lies. This process
is sound and should work and after 30 days or so, he should be able to delete
the older me.com address. It will likely remain unable to be deleted initially
as it takes a bit to release the primary address as far as I'm aware.

HTH.

Later...

Hello Kevin and Tim,

Unless list members have some kind of objection, I would ask that this thread
remain, on-list, as I would like to learn of Tim's solution to this problem.

Tim, as I see it, cannot Kevin simply remove his iCloud alias from his @me.com
Apple ID and turn it into its own, independent, Apple ID?

Guys,

Many years ago, I subscribed to a Reaper mailing list using my [email protected]
address. This address is now long dead. I have since unsubscribed and
resubscribed to this mailing list using [email protected]. However, even
though my e-mails from this list come to my iCloud address, hitting reply
automatically populates the sending address as [email protected]. If I don’t
happen to remember to click on the outgoing address and change it to
[email protected], the mail will be sent to nowhere and it will take a few
days for me to realize that the reason I haven’t heard from whatever I asked
about is because nobody saw what I wrote.

I have tried my best to make sure that [email protected] is toast. It is no longer
present as a sender’s e-mail address. But it remains as an option in the list
of e-mail addresses I can choose when sending e-mails. In fact, if I am
currently highlighting an e-mail that came to my iCloud account, initiating a
blank e-mail appears to populate the From field with [email protected], regardless
of what e-mail address I actually want in the From field. I can’t remove this
me.com address as an option in the From field no matter what I do. Can anyone
help?

Thanks,
Kevin
