Dave, Took some work, but I think that I've figured it out. Open TextEdit, then under the Window menu, select the tab you wish to separate out. Next go back to the Window menu and select Move Tab to new window. Now you'll have two windows to choose from. If you had many tabs within the TextEdit window, you'll need to do this a number of times to remove the "Merge" of the windows. What likely happened is that you may have selected Merge Windows from this Window menu at some point, and this brought all those tabs into one object. Not sure what it looks like visually, but there must be a point to it. As long as you move the tabs to new windows, it should eliminate the problem.
