The user can easily silence the speech, so I wouldn’t regard this as a problem. However, for anyone who uses speech without a braille display, the braille material would otherwise just be treated as whitespace, I suppose, and I’m not sure that’s desirable. Perhaps a punctuation/symbol setting should turn this off; I’d call that a feature request.

NVDA on windows, and Jaws I think, don't announce the braille Unicode characters as voiceover does on the Mac. What was interesting to me that Jonathan thinks that this is a feature, and not a problem! If you think that this is so, and don't affect the user experience on mac negatively, we could ignore this issue, and let voiceover handle it as it wants. 😊 A bit about what we are doing: we are trying to build a service (using a website) to enable blind people (like myself) to deal with graphs. To do so, we are "drawing" shapes on the braille display using braille Unicode. The system now knows to present data as graph when inputted to our system as numbers, but in our future plans, we want to get the data from images also. Forgive me for forgetting the initial dot-6. In NVDA and JAWS, these characters are currently ignored by speech, but are displayed on a Braille display. VoiceOver should also be showing the cells. This is quite useful on webpages, where you don't want Braille to be be modified by the Screen Reader based on translations.
