Hello Dan, Tim and others will most likely have a more comprehensive answer but as I have a mid-2014 MBP running Catalina, I can tell you that Catalina runs on mid-2014 units, perfectly.
I don't know how you updated your Mac but, somewhere during the Mojave life-cycle, Apple changed the formatting of the internal SSD drives. This change in file format was / is crucial to the successful installation of Catalina. Give Apple a call and do some Google searches to make certain that your current drive format is compatible with Catalina. Let us know how it goes. Oh, by the way, this change in format did not apply to spinning drives. So, I'm assuming you are attempting to install Catalina on the Mac's SSD internal drive. With the eight PFS volume said I still was unable to upgrade the only thing it would do was install Mojave it would not let me install Catalina. does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a bunch.
