Check your general preferences to make sure that the space bar only plays the selected material. Sounds like this is unchecked. you want to be sure to check this. Also, Command+y does in fact move the insertion point to the play head. That is, Unless Marv changed something I am not aware of. When I want to select something, I do this:
1. Play until I hear the beginning of the thing I want to select. 2. Press space to stop playing. 3. Press command+y to move the insertion point directly to the spot where the playback head is. 4. Press P to drop a marker at that spot. 5. Now, move to the end where you want the selection to stop. 6. Press space to stop then command why to move the insertion point to the playback head and then p to drop your next marker. 7. Now, by doing it this way, you give yourself the flexibility to make that selection any time you need to afterward by just pressing option+left or right until you get to the beginning marker then press command+right to move the selection directly to the next marker. Alternatively, you may prefer to use the M key to drop a marker. This will open a dialog which will allow you to name the marker for future reference. HTH.
