This is where I would go to an Apple Store andlet them run there
diagnostic tests. I think they can do that.

I did not really understand the information on the Apple Support page.
I don’t think the problem is the drives themselves or even the hub I
was using. So when I get back in July, I will try to fix it over the
phone with them and if that doesn’t work, I will take it to the store.
Sure hope I don’t have to get a new Mac. This one is too new for
that, being a 2020 Mac mini that I like a lot.

John: Yes, I finally contacted them, after so many times I made up
excuses or thought maybe I had done something wrong. I was not able
to stay with them long enough to do the first aid, but they confirmed
that something was indeed wrong. Time Machine only kicked back in
when I disconnected and then reconnected the drive, but it was
supposed to be backing up all the time. I had not looked lately and
it had been over a month!
I will be going on a trip for almost three weeks, and this Mac is not
going. So I will have to take care of it when I get back. I don’t
know what this could possibly be, if it’s a hardware problem,
something corrupt, or what. But I can be assured that it will not be
convenient. But on the bright side, I may learn more about my Mac
system than I would have otherwise. Just hope I don’t have to spend
a lot of money! I have always liked this M1, but it seems to be sick
right now.

Have you called Apple support? It sounds like something a bit
more serious than a simple problem. You might want to see what they
say.

Hello. I had a drive or two that I thought were causing problems
in the Finder on my M1 Mac mini. Drives were getting burned up and
just not functioning right. I got rid of the hub. Unfortunately,
though, I am now having problems with drives no matter how they are
connected. Is the Finder just not stable on these Macs? I even
plugged a little thumb drive into the USB port on my Apple
keyboard. I tried several times to copy some files and the drive
disappears. I expect it to be slow, but not to disappear.
Is this a known problem? Do I need to take this Mac to the Apple
Store? Thanks for any insights into this growing problem.
