Sorry if I sound frustrated, but yes, I've been pressing Command+F5 to start VoiceOver since 2010. In fact, I did not change my keyboard to not use the FN Keys, so for me it's FN+Command+F5, and that didn't work either. I suspect my inability to choose the recovery boot drive is a timing issue. When I can, I'll hook up that long HDMI cable and try it with someone present who can help on the television end of things and confirm what I'm actualy doing.

did you do Command F 5?

My very new M4 Mac Mini has stopped working. I started an application,
VoiceOver gave a sputter, and everything died. I tried restarting in the normal
way, even waited for fifteen minutes or so, thinking it might be recovering and
doing a full disk scan, but no go. So, I decided to investigate how to restart
in Recovery/Safe Mode. Turns out, the old Intel Macs could be started in safe
(actually called Recovery) mode if you couldn't see the screen by repeatedly
trying the Shift+Command+R business. The new Silicon Macs do it differently.
You have to hold the power button in until a start menu appears, then you have
to choose the volume. I disconnected all my external drives--two Thunderbolt
data drives and a Time Machine backup drive--and tried this. Of course, I had
no idea when this startup menu would appear, or once it did, if it did, how to
select the one and only volume for bootstrapping, so I winged it. The
instructions further say that once the volume for booting is selected, press
Shift+RETURN to continue. I tried that, but nothing happened. Unfortunately,
the nearest thing I have to a monitor--a large-screen television with a couple
free HDMI ports--is about twelve feet away, and it is impractical to
near-impossible to relocate either the TV or the computer to connect them with
a short HDMI cable. However, I have a long one--a twenty-footer--whichI could
rig up later. But before I do that, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to
try booting the thing and getting VoiceOver on without the long HDMI cable
hooked up, I'd be forever grateful to know them.

Thanks in advance.
