I'm not sure of a better way and I'm also not 100% sure if this will work for 
you.  However, this is how I do it when my iPad is hooked up to my mac.  In 
iTunes.  I go to the sources table and move down to my iPad.  Then I vo plus 
shift plus m.  That brings up the context menu.  There should be options there 
like eject and sync and such.  If I keep going down I get my battery status.
