Mark,

I had listened to your pod cast sufficiently well.  There was a
missing item in things that need to happen, and even after that not
all items in mail will read immediately after they are opened in a
separate window.

The item that you were missing is in the Voice Over Utility.

If you uncheck (as is the default)
"Automatically select items in lists and tables." then the automatic
reading never works in addition, any "RSS" items in mail appear to
never read automatically using your method.

Just as an FYI since I believe MIke mentioned it, having the preview
pane on / off does not make a difference in automatic reading
according to my tests.
