The main difference between the way Windows handles files (media files
particularly) and the way Mac OS (and other Apple products) handles files is
metadata. Windows relies largely on their customers with media files to
organize them via a directory structure and to play them or add them to a
playlist manually. Keep in mind that this is generally speaking. Apple, on the
other hand, does all of this "tech" stuff behind the scenes and organizes your
files for you based on their metadata tags. In a perfect world, everyone with a
Mac computer would be using iTunes for the downloading of their music, books,
movies, etc. In this way, everything would work...all the time. ON the Windows
side, people may have five different media players for various types of files
and it's better to group things by directory. When beginning to use an Apple
product, some less-than desirable things may occur. The windows user neglects
the tagging of their files. Now we all know that audiobooks downloaded from
Audible are already tagged brilliantly, and music from the iTunes store is
likewise tagged perfectly. But, it being the twenty-first century where data
dissemination is the way of life, there are...other sources of obtaining movies
and music--and some of these bits of digital entertainment may lack some
critical bits of metadata that make iTunes properly sort it. So, instead of
making sure that all your mp3 audiobook titles are properly numbered and named
before copying and pasting them over to your Rockbox-enabled device for
playing, you now have to neglect the file names and pay closer attention to the
tags associated with your files. If you import all your stuff directly into
iTunes, then you can tag it properly with "Get Info". Chris (and others), I'm
willing to bet that the majority of iPod audiobook-related issues are
metadata-based, as I had similar problems when I first obtained an IOS device.
It's not that hard of a switch, and, quite frankly, it is a more organized and
secure system than maintaining files in structured directories--some people
dislike the amount of control Apple seems to exert on their end-users and site
that as one of their reasons for their continuing reluctance to switch, but it
is merely Apple trying to lighten the load of excessive administrative tasks so
their customers can focus on getting the important work done. I would much
rather finish something important than remember to defragment my hard drive; or
record a song instead of allocating my time to cleaning out the registry of old
programs; do research rather than get stuck with the daunting task of
maintaining a meticulously user-organized list of files and folders so that my
handful of media players can use them. Anyway I apologize for the lack of
brevity in this email--that's my thesis for the evening:)
I hope I have provided some insight, at the very least.
Smilingly:)

I still haven't mastered this fine art of doing mp3 books on the apple devices.
Maybe some listers with more extensive knowledge of such could help?
Thanks!!!

If the iPod touch recognizes the file(s) you are playing as an audiobook, then
there is an option to do this. In the now playing screen, there is a button
entitled "playback speed". By default, it is set to normal and will inform you
of such. Double-tapping this button will set it to double, double-tapping it
again will cut the speed to half the original, and double-tapping it yet again
will return it to normal. I hope this in some way helps nudge you along the
pathway of success!

Hi,
While we're on this topic, can you play audiobooks at double speed on the Ipod
Touch, if so, how?

out of order even when they are numbered files and the numbers are in the file
names.

can be a bit tedious, but if you're not going to convert the files to .m4b,
double checking the tag information is your best bet.

I want to play a folder of MP3 files, which are ripped from CD audiobooks on my
iPod. I know that I must add the files to my iTunes library. I thin find them
in iTunes, select them all, and do VO/shift/M and chose get info.
In there I change the genre to audiobook and then go to the options
tab and change it to audiobook there as well. I choose not to include while
shuffling. The book then shows up in the books portion of iTunes, but the
title became Unknown and the MP3 files were all in the wrong order.

but it is a pain when they are out of order. Audible books work just fine,
however.
