I ran mail in pop/smtp mode for a long time with gmail. that was fine, but 
didn't give me direct access to some of the other folders (like spam). I use 
imap mode as its a bit more real time and I don't have to store all those mails 
locally.

I can, however, see a reason for pop. most people don't leave their machines on 
24/7 like I do.
