Hi, You can set up growl notifications within adium to read your incoming messages and some other events automaticly. I'd recommend you go out and update your growl though. The one that comes with adium is a bit rusty and old.
Dock folders are a bit annoying, but you can make them open. navigate to the file or folder you want to open from the dock. Press control option shift m to bring up the context menu. Arrow to open and press enter.
