Carolyn, I've had a Mac for close to a year and have never had a problem with VoiceOver announcing where the insertion point is. But to be quite honest, I ignore it entirely. Whenever I start typing, I have a habit of arrowing left and right to make sure I know where I am. So in a way, I could do without that. But since I subconsciously ignore it, it has never bothered me enough to find a way to turn it off. But like I said, I was asked this question and didn't have the answer. Obviously, someone wants it turned off.
