I was actually talking about using my Iphone, not my Mac. I'm using threds on my Mac and I worked out that for me, at least, it's better to expand a thred using the right arrow then I get told what messages are in the thred and I can just use left arrow and then delete if I get tired of the string of messages in a thred.
