Actually, it doesn't work as it should for pop mail either. In mail preferences, I have checked the option to have erased mail deleted when I quit mail. It has done this once. Most of the time, when I finish going through my Email, I have to just do the Shif-command-delete to get the trash emptied. And I know plenty of people who think that Apple has broken many things in Mail with version 5, and not just VO-related stuff either.
