Maybe I missed it but I was able to navigate to the English link just fine but hitting enter popped a new page and loaded the PDF which triggers the inaccessible Adobe PDF plugin. So, I tried command+enter and option+enter but both just popped a new window with the same inaccessible PDF plugin. The only short way I could figure it out was to turn off Javascript and the the option+enter worked. Whatever their JS does it breaks the link downloading. To turn off JS, I usually have the develop menu turned on by checking the "Show Develop Menu in menu bar" checkbox in the Advanced section of preferences. In that menu is a Disable JavaScript option. With that checked option+enter worked as expected. Just had to remember to turn JS back on afterwards.

Hi Esther,

It didn't quite work for me as you described I found that I had to do
Option+Return in order to get the link to download. I also had to do the
Command+L step from within the PDF view; I was originally trying to do it by
closing that PDF view first but that put the original page URL back in the
address box. Anyway, you gave some good tips there and I got what I wanted. I
will paste in the URL to the page I've been playing with.

http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/portable-audio-players/NS-CLHD01.html?supportTab=open

It spreads over to a second line here on my machine. With that page loaded,
look for an H2 labeled Documentation. The links immediately following are
languages for the manuals. It's those language links that you can have some
fun with.

Hi Steven,

I've found some web pages, viewed with Safari, where you have to first
interact with the link before getting the options to download, etc.
with VO-Shift-M. (One example is the Blind Cool Tech web site.) And
I've found some other sites that are badly coded so that focus doesn't
bring you to the actual link position. These might be cases where the
developer is using table formatting to achieve the visual layout, for
example, and so is rendering the page in a way that does not comply
with web standards. This is true, I think, the page where you can (or
rather, cannot) access the "Readability" bookmarklet. However, in
every case where I've been able to display a PDF document or play an
mp3 file in the Safari browser or its Webkit equivalent, I've been
able to download the same file with the following two steps:

1. Navigate to the address bar of Safari with Command+L
2. Press Return

The first step highlights the URL in the address bar and then pressing
the "Return" key forces the downloading of the highlighted item,
similar to using Option+Return on a link.

If I end up playing an mp3 file or displaying a PDF file in Safari,
I'll use the two steps given above to force a download of the file.
You do not have to wait for the entire file to download in Safari
before you issue your Command+L followed by a press of the "Return"
key to force a download.

Esther

I'm not sure further on the type of links these were except that
hitting the return key along with any of the modifier keys like
Option, Command, or any combination, would just pop me into the
preview of that PDF. I never saw that file down in my downloads
folder. It's like they just popped into a text rendering of that PDF
like another web link. Nothing was actually downloaded from what I
could tell. Another thought is maybe they sorta "streamed" the PDF?

Hi,
I have noticed tat sometimes the shortcut menu does not work for some links
but have4 not found a reproducible situation I could report to apple.
I can just say that when you are on a link and hold down option and press
enter it should download it. THe way to know if it does is to press command
option l while in safari and tab to downloads list. OR go to your downloads
folder and see if it is there. If this does not work I have no idea why.

I have two somewhat related questions here.
1. I've noticed that some links identified by VO as normal links, will
not yield the typical context menu when I press Shift-VO-m; I just get
the menu with 5 items and are all full page related. But other links
on the same page do work properly and will yield something like 9
items with the typical link related choices. The links that are
giving me trouble are in a list from what I can tell. This is on the
Best Buy page describing the new accessible HD radio; I'm using Lion
10.7.4 along with latest Safari browser.
2. The links I refer to in item #1 point to a .pdf file but I can't
seem to download it. If I hit any of the enhancement keys like Shift,
Option, or Command, plus the Return key, it just opens the PDF in a
previewer. I have the Safari preference to open files after download
Unchecked so I should be able to download this PDF somehow.
Any answers to either of these questions? What might I be missing here?
