Hi. A Google Reader account is what handles the syncing. So if you use multiple rss readers, or multiple devices, you can keep your feeds and read articles in sync. I used to use mail's RSS feature, until I also had an iOS device. It's worth noting that if you're planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion, and you use RSS in mail, you may want to start looking for another solution.
