Well, based on the calibration problems mentioned by the Digit-Eyes team, I assumed some form of absolute lighting that the app knows and can filter would be required. That's why I mentioned the flash; I figured a color identifier would have you hold the phone within an inch or two of the object, then flash the LEDs to give the image a lighting that the app could filter out as it is always the same. I am hesitant to try more color identifiers, as all the free ones I've tried on my iPod don't work reliably at all. Yet another time when I wish Apple offered trials of apps...
