in that case, I think it was ricardo who gave the advice to uncheck the "add
media to iTunes library", or something like that in the iTunes preferences.
Then, when you add the movie files to your iTunes library, it'll just make a
pointer to them instead of actually copying them over to the iTunes library.

Hi Phil,
Thanks. I guess I'll just have to try it and see what happens. What I
want is to continue to keep music on my MBA, but keep movies externally.
Sounds doable, I'll have a go at it and see what happens.
Cheers,
Donna

If you disconnect the external drive, and then start iTunes, I believe
you will be prompted for the location of a library for iTunes to use.

Hi all,
I have two questions re the storing of movies in the iTunes library.
1. Is it possible to store them on a portable hard drive?
2. If the answer to No. 1 is yes, if the drive is not connected to your
Mac, does that mess up your iTunes library?
Thanks for any thoughts or experiences anyone can share.
Cheers,
Donna
