Hi Gigi, I think it depends a lot on your friend. How comfortable is she with tech in general? Do you think she would be comfortable on a larger screen? In my opinion, the larger screen has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of course is that it's more complicated to navigate, especially at first. However, it has many advantages. If she's likely to read much using ibooks or Kindle, you can get a lot more text on each page by decreasing the font. I kind of like that, because if you're not continuous reading, it means you don't have to turn the page as often. Another thing I like about the iPad is that you do less opening and closing of things because of the additional real-estate. So for example, in the Mail program, you can still see the messages list even if you have a message open.
Also, Alex mentioned contact management and messages. You do have those things on the iPad. One thing she might want to think about is an iPad mini. The Specs aren't as great as I would have hoped, but it's a nice compromise between the smaller iPhone screen and the larger iPad.
