I thought it was no longer possible to select and deselect the
attachments to show in the message.
as not yet upgraded to the Mavericks, I'm just reading the comments of
the friends group.
I am thinking of upgrading to a week.

You can show attachments in the messages table by going to the View menu, down
to the Columns submenu and pressing Return on Attachments.
